Say it with flour

There were Mother’s Day cards to collect at preschool pick-up. They’d asked every child to answer the question ‘I love my Mummy because…’ and stuck the answers to hand-painted pictures.

I got a preview of other kids’ answers as my four-year-old’s keyworker flicked through the pile:

I love my Mummy because… “She tickles me and it’s funny”

I love my Mummy because… “She is beautiful”

I love my Mummy because… “I love her”

And then we came to my son’s card:

Hand

Added to his assessment of how I spend my time when he’s at preschool, I think they are building up a fine picture of my parenting technique.

Happy Mother’s Day!

How utterly fabulous! Plus proof of the old adage about the way to (even a mini) man’s heart…

My eldest (7) said he loves me because I take him out and buy him things. Youngest said he loves me because I tell him “how to be good and how to behave nicely and how not to be bad and do naughty stuff”.
So, a material mother who buys love after being a formidable disciplinarian! NOOO!!

ps. You’re obviously a great cook.

  3. Well I noted that he didn’t say ‘good food’. Just ‘food’!

Funnily enough, while listening to a Mother’s Day phone-in for a dedication hour on the R2 breakfast show on Friday, the vast majority of children said their mum was great ‘because she made them lovely dinners’. Food as a path to the heart is clearly not the preserve of men. Lovely piece, Isabel, as always x

  5. I love that card – definitely one for display!
